If you're weighing Bečići against Sutomore, you're essentially choosing between two versions of the classic Montenegrin beach day: the groomed, sun-lounger-lined stretch that comes with a resort price tag, and the easy-going town beach where locals and budget travellers have been coming for decades. Both sit on the open Adriatic, both are largely pebble, and both deliver warm, clear water from mid-June through September — but the similarities stop around the shoreline.
The shore: shape and size
Bečići curves for roughly 2 km south of Budva along a near-perfect crescent. The pebbles here are small and smooth, shelving gradually into a sea that turns vivid turquoise as you wade out. The beach is wide enough in shoulder season to feel spacious, though in July and August every square metre is spoken for by sun beds and baldahins. At the eastern end the shoreline merges with Rafailovići, blurring into a continuous resort strip.
Sutomore's beach runs about 1.5 km along Bar municipality's coast. The pebble is coarser and the beach narrower in places, but the bay is sheltered and the water stays calm. A modest promenade lined with pine trees backs the beach, giving a shady escape that Bečići, more exposed to the open Adriatic, rarely offers.
The sea
Both beaches benefit from Montenegro's warmest month, August, when sea temperature along the southern Adriatic reaches around 25–26 °C. Bečići's gradual shelf makes it easy for weak swimmers and children to stay comfortable in the shallows. Sutomore's bay is equally gentle on entry and similarly calm — the Bar coast sees no significant swell. Visibility is good at both, though neither rivals the crystalline depths of the enclosed bays inside the Bay of Kotor.
Vibe and crowd
Bečići draws a mix of package-holiday tourists, prosperous domestic visitors and a younger crowd spilling over from Budva's nightlife strip, which is only a five-minute drive away. The beach has a polished, resort atmosphere: beach bars pump house music through the afternoon, cocktail menus run to three pages, and the parasol lines are perfectly straight. It is busy from late June and extremely busy in July and August.
Sutomore feels more like a Montenegrin town beach that tourists happen to also enjoy. The crowd is a blend of Serbian and Montenegrin families on annual summer holidays, budget-conscious travellers and retirees who return each season. There is music, but it is at café volume rather than club volume. The pace is slower, the vendors less aggressive, and the overall atmosphere more forgiving for those who did not book three months in advance.
Facilities and cost
At Bečići, expect to pay EUR 10–15 per sun bed and EUR 40–100 for a baldahin or cabana at the better-known operators. Beach bar food — grilled fish, burgers, salads — is priced for the resort market. Parking can be expensive and scarce in high season; the Budva bus connects easily from town.
At Sutomore, sun beds hover around EUR 5–10, and you can find a set (two beds plus umbrella) for EUR 15–20 at the quieter end of the beach. Grilled food and cold drinks from the seafront cafés cost noticeably less than Budva equivalents. Sutomore has a train station on the Bar–Belgrade line, making it one of the most easily accessible beaches in Montenegro without a car.
Who each beach suits
**Choose Bečići** if you want a polished resort experience within easy reach of Budva's restaurants and nightlife, you don't mind paying resort prices, and you're happy to share the beach with a large crowd in peak season. The consistent quality of facilities and the beautiful crescent shape make it one of the Montenegrin Riviera's most photogenic stops.
**Choose Sutomore** if budget matters, if you prefer a more authentic local atmosphere, or if you're travelling by train. Families with young children benefit from the calmer bay, the shade from the promenade pines, and the lower cost of a full day out. It also tends to stay quieter even in August, making it a reliable escape from Budva-area congestion.
Getting there
Bečići is a 10-minute drive or bus ride from Budva centre, and roughly 35 minutes from Tivat Airport. Sutomore is about 35 km south: around 30 minutes by car from Bečići, or reachable by train from Bar (10 min) and Podgorica (around 1 hr). Podgorica Airport is approximately 45 minutes away by road.
