FAQ

Are Montenegro's beaches sand or pebble?

Most of Montenegro's beaches are pebble, but there are notable sandy exceptions worth knowing about. The longest sandy stretch is Velika Plaza near Ulcinj — roughly 12 to 13 kilometres of shallow, sandy coastline that's ideal for families and kitesurfers. Ada Bojana, a river-island beach just south of Ulcinj, is also sandy and well known as a naturist destination.

Along the central coast, Jaz beach near Budva has a partly sandy surface, and Becici — a Blue Flag beach — offers a sand-and-pebble mix. Plavi Horizont near Tivat is another good sandy option on the Bay of Kotor side. If soft sand is your priority, plan to be in the Ulcinj area or check Becici and Jaz.

Pebble beaches do have their upside: the water tends to be clearer and the shoreline feels cleaner. Beaches around Lustica (Zanjic, Mirista) and the coves near Petrovac are pebble but have beautifully transparent water.
