Velika Plaža — meaning 'Big Beach' or 'Long Beach' — is the longest beach in Montenegro and arguably the finest stretch of open sandy coast on the eastern Adriatic, running approximately 13 kilometres from the southern suburbs of Ulcinj to the mouth of the Bojana River. The beach faces south-west into the open Adriatic with no offshore islands to break the swell, producing reliably surfable wave conditions — unusually for the Adriatic — that attract wind- and kite-surfers from across Europe. The sand is fine-grained with a slight reddish tint from mineral content; the water is shallow for 50–100 metres offshore, making it ideal for children and less confident swimmers. The beach is subdivided into concession sections interspersed with free public areas. The southern end merges with Ada Bojana island, the main naturist area. Despite its scale and quality Velika Plaža remains less commercially developed than the Budva Riviera, giving it a wilder, more natural atmosphere. The town of Ulcinj has a significant Albanian Muslim heritage, lending the entire area a cultural distinctiveness from the northern Montenegrin coast.
