Velika Plaža (Long Beach)

Velika Plaža — meaning 'Big Beach' or 'Long Beach' — is the longest beach in Montenegro and arguably the finest stretch of open sandy coast on the eastern Adriatic, running approximately 13 kilometres from the southern suburbs of Ulcinj to the mouth of the Bojana River. The beach faces south-west into the open Adriatic with no offshore islands to break the swell, producing reliably surfable wave conditions — unusually for the Adriatic — that attract wind- and kite-surfers from across Europe. The sand is fine-grained with a slight reddish tint from mineral content; the water is shallow for 50–100 metres offshore, making it ideal for children and less confident swimmers. The beach is subdivided into concession sections interspersed with free public areas. The southern end merges with Ada Bojana island, the main naturist area. Despite its scale and quality Velika Plaža remains less commercially developed than the Budva Riviera, giving it a wilder, more natural atmosphere. The town of Ulcinj has a significant Albanian Muslim heritage, lending the entire area a cultural distinctiveness from the northern Montenegrin coast.

Frequently asked questions

What is Velika Plaža and why is it significant on the Montenegrin coast?

Velika Plaža ("Long Beach") near Ulcinj is Montenegro's longest beach, stretching roughly 13 kilometres of sandy shoreline — unique on a coast that is otherwise dominated by pebble and gravel beaches.

The fine dark sand and shallow entry make it especially popular with families and those who find pebble beaches uncomfortable. It is also one of the few beaches in the country where conditions are good for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

The beach is backed by dunes and wetlands that form part of a protected natural area, giving it a wilder, less developed feel compared to the Budva Riviera.

Are there sunbeds and facilities available along Velika Plaža?

Yes, sunbed and umbrella rentals are available at various points along Velika Plaža, typically costing around EUR 5–15 per lounger per day or EUR 15–30 for a two-lounger-and-umbrella set, in line with Montenegrin beach norms.

The beach is very long, so facilities are spread out rather than concentrated. You'll find beach bars, snack stands, and basic changing facilities in the more developed central section, while the northern and southern ends are quieter and more natural.

Free stretches of sand are plentiful — you are never obligated to rent a sunbed, and much of the beach can be enjoyed with just a towel.

When is the best time to visit Velika Plaža and what should I expect in peak season?

The swimming season at Velika Plaža runs from mid-June to late September, with July and August being the busiest months. The sea reaches its warmest temperatures — around 25–26°C — in August, making it ideal for long swims.

In peak season the central section fills up quickly, especially on weekends when visitors arrive from Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Serbia as well as the local Ulcinj area. Arriving early (before 10 am) secures the best sunbed spots.

June and September are quieter and more comfortable — fewer crowds, lower prices, and the sea is still warm enough for enjoyable swimming.
