Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP)

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has become the most accessible and widely available watersport on the Montenegrin coast, having grown from a niche activity around 2012 to a ubiquitous offering at virtually every concession beach by 2020. A standard 10–11 ft all-round inflatable SUP is rented by the hour, typically €8–15 per hour depending on beach and operator. The calm morning conditions before the maestral develops — generally between 07:00 and 11:00 — provide ideal flat-water paddling. SUP touring in Boka Bay is particularly spectacular: the sheltered, deep water and historic shoreline make for multi-hour tours passing medieval fortifications, island churches, and vertical limestone cliffs. Guided SUP tours are offered by several operators in Tivat, Kotor, and Herceg Novi; the most popular route tours the inner bay past Perast and the islets of Our Lady of the Rocks and St George. SUP yoga has also arrived at a handful of beach clubs. No licence is required for SUP in Montenegro.

Frequently asked questions

What is stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and where can I try it on the Montenegrin coast?

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) involves standing on a large, stable board and propelling yourself with a single-blade paddle. It is suitable for all fitness levels and is one of the fastest-growing watersports on the Montenegrin coast.

SUP hire is available at most popular beach concessions from Herceg Novi in the north down to Ulcinj in the south. The calm, sheltered bays of Kotor Bay (Boka Kotorska) are particularly good for beginners because the water stays flat and there is interesting scenery to paddle around.

Open-sea beaches like Jaz or Sveti Stefan work well on calm mornings, but the afternoon Maestral can make the return paddle challenging for newcomers.

How much does it cost to rent a SUP board on a Montenegro beach?

Stand-up paddleboard rental on Montenegrin beaches typically costs EUR 10–20 per hour, with longer half-day rates available from some operators for EUR 25–40.

Prices are fairly consistent across the coast, though resort beaches in Budva and upscale areas like Porto Montenegro tend to be at the higher end. Some beach bars include a short orientation or balance tips in the hire price; full lessons with an instructor are a separate package.

Boards are usually inflatable (iSUP), which makes them easy to handle and transport. Paddles and a leash — which should be worn to prevent the board from drifting if you fall — are normally included.

What tips should a first-time SUP paddler know before renting a board in Montenegro?

Start on your knees to find your balance before standing — even experienced paddlers do this on an unfamiliar board. Keep your knees slightly bent, eyes on the horizon rather than the board, and paddle with your whole upper body rather than just your arms.

Timing matters: go out in the morning before the Maestral wind picks up (typically before noon in July–August) and stay within a comfortable distance of shore. Most rental operators will point out the boundaries of the area where you are allowed to paddle.

Always wear the leash, apply sunscreen to the back of your legs (the most exposed area when paddling), and make sure the rental staff know you are a first-timer so they can select a wider, more stable board.
